ozark has proven that Netflix can create its own prestigious crime series that turns heads. Now that it’s reached its series finale, Julia Garner, who played Ruth Langmore, reflects on her time on the hit series.
Garner, last seen in Netflix’s Shondaland miniseries invent AnnaShe enjoyed most of her work on the gritty drama set on Lake of the Ozarks — most of the time, anyway, except for one particularly chilling moment.
“Ozark” proved that Netflix can pull off prestige TV
Showrunner Chris Mundy came with a straightforward pitch and a plan for no more than five seasons. ozark is his brainchild – the story of a mild-mannered financial adviser who has spent years laundering money for a Mexican drug cartel. Things are going wrong, but Marty Byrde, played by Jason Bateman, has a plan to go even bigger to make things right.
Bateman was already in a relationship with Netflix thanks to arrested development Revival. The unique Little house on the prairie Actor put his influence behind the project, which resulted in a fairly robust marketing rollout. Another drama star, Laura Linney, also joined ozark. Julia Garner, who had previously worked regularly in minor supporting roles, finally got a big project as a leading actress.
Initial reaction was somewhat mixed, as the pilot saw some well-known prestige drama moves. However, when the show ended in 2022, fans mourned its demise. Mundy, along with the cast and crew, insisted that a two-part fourth season was the right way to settle things. This likely bodes well for the show’s reputation as a long-term piece of the Netflix streaming library.
Julia Garner’s most terrifying moment while filming ‘Ozark’ is surprising and funny
ozark went to some extremely dark places from the jump. The almost oppressively dark show left some room for humor, but usually of the dark variety. It’s not hard to believe that a number of scenes could have been extremely difficult for the actors to film.
But the one Garner yells as the worst isn’t exactly what one would expect. According to W Magazine, it was the presence of a rodent that freaked out the Waco actor.
“It was so embarrassing and I couldn’t even lift [the mouse]’ Garner said. “So they ended up with a hand double. I couldn’t — I couldn’t even use the toy… I found I couldn’t breathe.”
The cast and crew on the set found the events hilarious. “I got a message from some of the authors of a Mickey Mouse picture, like, ‘Heard you had an interesting day.'” So, for future reference, if Garner ever interacts with a mouse, it’s likely to be a body double do the heavy lifting for her.
Julia Garner has become a fixture on Netflix series and prestige crime shows
Garner’s time as Ruth Langmore was her greatest work at the time. She had small runs on shows like girl and The American as tertiary characters, always able to steal scenes. But as of now, she’s the kind of name shows that can be resold.
The 28-year-old’s latest work is a somewhat controversial version of the notorious crook of the rich, Anna Sorokin, aka Anna Delvey. The real Anna endorses the Netflix show invent Annabut some of their victims are not satisfied with their portrayal.
Regardless of how the show blurs the facts, it’s a compelling watch thanks to Garner’s sinister portrayal of Anna. She meets the complex German through the Russian accent. Garner is both a believable crook and a cold narcissist when things don’t go her way.
Between ozark and invent AnnaGarner is one of the top names in show business.
