Judd Apatow addresses controversial comments about Will Smith beating Chris Rock

Judd Apatow has clarified his opinion on the Will Smith-Chris Rock Oscars incident after a backlash over his comments.

In what has been called the “craziest” Oscars moment ever, Smith took the stage to slam Rock during the ceremony on Sunday night (March 27) and yelled, “Keep my wife’s name out of your friggin’ mouth.” “.

The altercation came after Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife, actress Jada Pinkett Smith.

After the incident, a number of stars – including Apatow – shared their take on Smith’s behavior.

In a now-deleted tweet, Apatow condemned the actor’s reaction, writing, “He (Smith) could have killed him. This is pure out of control anger and violence.”

In another tweet, which has since been deleted, Apatow jokingly warned Oscars host Amy Schumer not to attend the afterparty because “Will Smith wants to talk to you about the monologue.”

the knocked open The filmmaker received widespread criticism for both his comments and deletion.

“Of course @JuddApatow deleted his post when he found out she wasn’t popular,” one person wrote.

Apatow has now further specified his statements in an interview SiriusXM on Monday (March 28).

Of the controversy, he said: “The truth is I haven’t seen the show at the time. I was on the phone with a friend and then while we were on the phone they said, ‘Oh my god, Will Smith just hit Chris Rock.’

“And that’s not really how I saw it in the context of the show. I saw the clips. I’m not sure. My personal thought was that I didn’t quite understand the offense but I may be misunderstanding it because to me GI Jane was the most beautiful woman in the world.”

In the joke in question that caused Smith’s outburst, Rock Pinkett compared Smith – who revealed last year that she shaved her head after battling alopecia – to the title character (played by Demi Moore) from 1997 GI Jane.

“Jada, I love you. GI Jane 2can’t wait to see you,” he quipped, referring to Pinkett Smith’s shaved head.

Apatow continued: “[GI Jane] was Demi Moore at her strongest, most beautiful form. And the point of this movie was that she shaved her head and she looked amazing […] You could use a different example and make a really hurtful joke out of it. I don’t know, but there may be more levels that I don’t understand. And I don’t know all the connections.”

Smith has issued an official statement apologizing to Rock for his behavior and writing that his actions are “unacceptable and inexcusable”. Read the full apology here.

Smith’s mother has also spoken out about her son’s actions, saying she was “surprised” by his behavior.
