Journalist Frédéric Leclerc-Imhof was killed while reporting on the war in Ukraine

A French journalist was killed in eastern Ukraine on Monday when the humanitarian operation he was covering came under fire, his news agency said.

Frédéric Leclerc-Imhof, 32, was reporting for French broadcaster BFM TV “on a humanitarian operation in an armored vehicle” when he was hit by shrapnel near Severodonetsk, the outlet said.

The city has been the scene of fierce fighting in recent days as Russian troops attempted to seize the last Ukrainian positions in Luhansk Oblast.

Serhiy Haidai, governor of the Luhansk region, said in a telegram on Monday that an evacuation mission was hit by Russian artillery fire.

“Today our armored evacuation vehicle was trying to pick up 10 people from the area and came under enemy fire. Shrapnel pierced the vehicle’s armor and fatally wounded an accredited French journalist covering the evacuation in the neck,” he wrote.

Haidai added that a Ukrainian military officer who was present was saved by his helmet.

A second French journalist was injured in the attack, according to Ukraine’s Interior Ministry adviser Anton Gerashchenko, as well as a Ukrainian escort.

French President Emmanuel Macron Leclerc-Imhoff paid his respects on Twitter.

“Journalist Frédéric Leclerc-Imhoff was in Ukraine to expose the reality of the war. He was fatally shot on board a humanitarian bus along with civilians fleeing Russian bombs,” Macron wrote.

“I share the pain of Frédéric Leclerc-Imhoff’s family, relatives and colleagues, to whom I offer my condolences. I would like to reiterate France’s unconditional support to those who carry out the difficult task of information in the theaters of operations,” he added.
