Lily-Rose Depp has addressed her silence over Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s high-profile defamation trial.
In May, her father was embroiled in a multimillion-dollar lawsuit against his ex-wife Heard, suing her for allegedly implying that she abused her in 2018 Washington Post op ed.
Amid the six-week trial in Virginia, Depp received aggressive messages from Johnny’s fans, urging them to be vocal in support of their father.
However, she remained silent and has remained so ever since.
Now, in her new December/January cover story with ell, Depp defended her privacy, saying, “If it’s something that’s so private and so personal that all of a sudden it doesn’t feel so personal… I really feel entitled to have my secret mind garden.”
“I also think I’m not here to answer for anyone and I feel like throughout my career people have really wanted to define me through the men in my life, whether that’s my family members or my friends , What ever .”
She added, “And I’m really ready to define myself for the things that I’m putting out there.”
Depp is Johnny’s eldest child, whom he shares with his ex-partner Vanessa Paradis. They also share 20-year-old son Jack.
Johnny and Paradis were together for 14 years starting in 1998. Shortly thereafter, he began dating Heard, whom he married three years later in 2015.
In 2016, Heard filed for divorce, which was finalized a year later in 2017.
During the May trial, almost every detail of their tumultuous relationship was revealed to the world.
Depp won the trial, with the jury finding that Heard defamed him on all three counts. He was awarded $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages.
Heard was also awarded $2million (£1.6million) in her counterclaim that she was defamed by one of Depp’s lawyers.
However, Depp has appealed, claiming the case was “fatally flawed,” while Heard separately argued that the verdict was “inherently and irreconcilably inconsistent” in her appeal outline.
