Wrestling legend John Cena is hoping to return to WWE in the near future.
Cena discussed a possible return to the ring for the 20th anniversary of his WWE television debut on June 27th. Cena was part of the now legendary Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) class of 2002, which featured Brock Lesnar, Randy Orton and Batista [Dave Bautista].
“I know I’m going to be 20 pretty soon in WWE years, so that’s a pretty big deal,” Cena said in a recent interview. “And from a pretty storied class of people: Batista, Randy Orton, Brock, who all turned 20 this year. So I’m aware that’s coming around the corner, and who knows?”
“But it’s one of those hard truths … a lot of cool stuff happens, and I don’t want to say no to any of these opportunities that are on my doorstep,” Cena added. “Well, I don’t know when I’ll be back, but hopefully soon. I’ve been gone too long.”
Cena has been out of the ring for about a year. The 13-time WWE Champion lost to Roman Reigns at SummerSlam in late August before competing in a non-televised event following WWE SmackDown in September.
Since then he has focused on his acting career. Although Cena does not wrestle in public, he said he continues to go to the gym to maintain his strength at age 45.
“Fitness has been a part of my life since I was 13. I’m not changing because of the job, I’m changing for the time,” he said. “I’m older so I need to stretch a little more, I need to warm up a little more, I need to rest a little more. Recovery is one thing.”
Cena has been an actor since he starred in The Marine in 2006. In recent years he has had roles in the latest film in the Fast & Furious franchise and The Suicide Squad, a film directed by James Gunn.
His performance in The Suicide Squad as Peacemaker, a man who fights for peace by killing people, led to Cena starring in a television series based on the character, aptly titled Peacemaker.
Cena was asked how he successfully transitioned between wrestling and acting.
“Just be okay with failing,” Cena said. “This transition from offer to offer took how long, 15 years now? From ‘The Marine’ to today – and plenty of failures in it, you’ve been watching.”
“It’s okay to have a great support system,” he added. “Certainly the WWE audience… they made me the man I am today.”
Cena’s possible return comes after another wrestling legend announced he would be getting back in the ring one last time.
Ric Flair will wrestle for Jim Crockett Promotions on July 31st in Nashville. This event titled “Ric Flair’s Last Match”. takes place on the same weekend that WWE hosts its premier summer pay-per-view, SummerSlam.
