Joe Burrow may have raised expectations for Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields

Joe Burrow may be on top of the football world but in Week 2 he made three interceptions to lose Chicago Bears. It’s Justin Fields, who make a running late key in the game to secure a 20-17 victory.

How things have changed since September 19, 2021 at Soldier Field.

The Chicago Bears have completed a disappointing 2021 season. They finished 6-11, then fired head coach Matt Nagy and general manager Ryan Pace.

Fields ended his rookie campaign with 1870 yards of passing, 7 touchdown passes and 10 interceptions.

The Cincinnati Bengals won the AFC North Championship. Burrow has the Bengals in the franchise’s third Super Bowl appearance.

Talk about a change to a repressed franchise.

Cincinnati finished 4-10-1 in 2020. Burrow’s rookie ended with a horrific knee injury. He returned in his second season to throw 4611 yards, 34 touchdowns and 14 picks.

Burrow’s leap from freshman to sophomore year may have raised the stakes for all quarterbacks entering sophomore year like the Chicago Bears young buck Justin Fields.

Kansas Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Baltimore Ravens quarterback division. Now there’s Burrow taking his team to a Super Bowl to add to the pressure.

In many ways, that was unfair to Fields. He will be playing for a new coaching staff. Also, Nagy’s coach this season hasn’t done much in preparing Fields as a great full-back.

You’ll still get fans and pundits who will expect any of these 2021 first-round select midfield quartets to produce the same as Burrow next season. Especially Fields, who shares some similarities with Burrow.

They both played in the College Soccer Championship game – Burrow won his game, while Fields lost. Both question whether their college success translates into good NFL games. Both played their rookie seasons behind a lousy front line — Burrow still played behind a lousy front line.

However, Burrow was just one win away from claiming the Lombardi trophy.

It would be great if Fields can elevate his game next season and lead the Chicago Bears to the Super Bowl. He probably won’t be in the same condition as the sophomore Burrow has this season.

The field will enter next season with possibly a brand new wide receiver and tight finish corps. Darnell Mooney and Cole Kmet are the only players under contract expected to return after catching a pass from Fields. Dazz Newsome is the only player left under contract with a chance to make the list.

Unless the Chicago Bears do a showdown and re-sign Allen Robinson, Fields will have to build chemistry with at least four new takeover targets.

Burrow hit passes to Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd last season. The Bengals then added his former LSU teammate Ja’Marr Chase in the draft.

While Burrow is out with a knee injury, he can still do more research on the offense he is currently committing. Fields will have to learn a whole new offense and one that is the opposite of Nagy’s offense.

The good news is that Fields’ new offensive coordinator is Luke Getsy, who is from the coaching staff Kyle Shahanen, Sean McVay and Matt LaFleur. Burrow’s head coach and offensive lineman, Zac Taylor, comes from the same coaching streak.

Fields has the chance to play in a friendly against the quarterback but it usually takes a season or two for that offense to kick in.

Plus, Fields has a few more weak points that he has to clear up before he’s ready to guide a team to the Super Bowl. He has to escape the ball faster. He has to cut down on his fumbling. He still has to get better at reading defenses, understanding his line defenses, and getting comfortable with the difference between the NFL open and open college when it comes to pitching in the receiver. his.

Thankfully, the Chicago Bears seem to have assembled a better coaching team than they did last season to help erase those weaknesses.

Instead of expecting a leap in the second year like Burrow, the better hope is that he plays somewhere between the Jalen Hurts’ or Josh Allen’s second season.

The game hasn’t been perfect this season but he’s played well enough to help get the Philadelphia Eagles into the knockout stages. Allen had a better leap than Hurts in the second season, but still wasn’t enough to get the Buffalo Bills to the Super Bowl.

The hope is that Fields develops into the quarterback we saw in the second half against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but that could take time. It could mean not going to the Super Bowl in a sophomore year like what Burrow has achieved.
