ESPN’s new Monday Night Football team in Joe Buck and Troy Aikman made a surprise announcement on Monday’s episode of Good Morning America.
The former Fox broadcasters, which left the network for ESPN this off-season, announced the week two special showcase event with two primetime matchups on Monday.
ESPN and ABC will air two NFL games on September 19 — beginning with the Titans-Bills game at 7:15 p.m. ET on ESPN and the Vikings-Eagles matchup starting at 8:30 p.m. ET on ABC. It is unclear which of the games Buck and Aikman will name that evening.
In recent years, ESPN has had a Week 1 doubleheader where the second game starts after the first. Last season, the network returned to a single game in the opening week of the season.
The week 2 doubleheader differs in that both games are running simultaneously for most games. The full 2022 NFL schedule will be released Thursday, with more announcements expected throughout the week.
Aikman and Buck, who together have scheduled over 300 games for Fox, will enter the Monday Night Football booth on September 12th.
In March it was announced that Aikman was leaving Fox to sign a new broadcasting deal with ESPN. Buck followed shortly thereafter when Fox released him from his contract a year earlier. The pair have been broadcast partners since 2002 and have declared six Super Bowls together.
Last week, the NFL announced five international games for the 2022 season — the first-ever NFL regular-season game is on Nov. 13 in Germany when the Seahawks take on the Buccaneers at 9:30 a.m. ET at the Allianz Arena, home of FC Bayern Munich. The game will be broadcast on NFL Network.
