Jimmy Savile victim says Steve Coogan could ‘fight’ to portray the darker side of the pedophile in a new BBC series

A woman who was once assaulted on camera by Jimmy Savile has spoken out about the upcoming BBC drama based on the prolific celebrity pedophile.

In The billingComing to screens later this year, Savile will be played by Steve Coogan, the actor best known for comic book character Alan Partridge.

Sylvia Edwards was 18 when Savile attacked her during an on-camera shoot top of the pops. At the time, her complaints of being groped were dismissed by a crew member.

Speak with Sky newsShe said: “I hope [Coogan] portrayed it well to make people realize how much of a monster this man was.

“[Coogan] can play the jerk like Jimmy Savile did, but the dark side I think might give him problems,” she added. “Jimmy Savile was destroyed anyway… he will forever be remembered as a pedophile.

“I hope he plays it well… I hope he plays it in a way that people can really see how despicable Savile was.”

The billing has come under fire elsewhere, with some critics expressing skepticism about the taste of the miniseries and about the casting of Coogan.

The BBC has also been heavily criticized for its role in facilitating the cover-up of Savile’s crimes, with some accusing the broadcaster of hypocrisy in producing the new mini-series.

Earlier this month, Coogan said the backlash against the series was partly due to “the nation enabling the pedophile host’s crimes”.
