Jim Carrey says Jada Pinkett Smith is ‘a tough girl’ who ‘can defend herself’

Jim Carrey has explained his earlier comments saying Will Smith “should have been arrested” for beating Chris Rock at the Oscars.

The actor was one of many celebrities to reflect on the dramatic moment that took place after Rock joked about Jada Pinkett Smith’s baldness and dubbed her “GI Jane.” Pinkett Smith has been open about her struggles with alopecia.

Carrey said he would have sued Smith for “$200 million (£153 million)” if he had been Rock, saying that the King Richard Star ‘should have been arrested’

In a later interview with Associated PressCarrey clarified his comments.

“I see it as a bigger issue, and it’s about pushing boundaries — boundaries and allowability for certain behaviors,” Carrey told the outlet.

“The fact is, people are given license to become violent if they don’t like what they hear. And it just wasn’t meant to be.”

The 60-year-old expressed empathy for Smith and indicated his actions were the result of pressure.

He said: “I also think that people who are not unlike Will or me live under a lot of pressure. We build up a lot of pressure [and] We are encouraged by this country to never stop and never be satisfied and never look at our lives and say, ‘You know what? i am enough I have enough. I’ve done enough I don’t need nine stores.

“I don’t have to be a film producer, director, writer, actor, star and have a record label and be on TikTok and be on social media and have a reality show and share my innermost life on a therapy show.'”

Carrey continued, “This is beyond our range. And we’re starting to see the symptoms, what it’s like to live outside your range and crack down under the pressure.

“That was it. It was more than an insult to someone’s wife. Jada is a tough girl. She can fight back. She was not physically assaulted. This was someone who was out of range, and he was thinking more about what he looked like in that moment than what was right.”

The actor concluded, “I’m not judging [Smith] Therefore. It’s just wrong.”

Carrey has been called a “hypocrite” for his comments about Smith after video surfaced of him forcefully kissing then-20-year-old Alicia Silverstone at the 1997 MTV Movie Awards.

Smith – who faces disciplinary action – later apologized for hitting Rock, explaining he “went out of line and I was wrong”.

He also reportedly called Academy bosses earlier this week to again express regret for his behavior.
