Jermaine Beckford stunned by Leeds United star Junior Firpo’s turnaround

Jermaine Beckford has praised Junior Firpo for how he has turned around his form at Leeds United after his ‘difficult’ start to life in Yorkshire.

In 2021, Leeds United junior Firpo signed for £12m from Barcelona (Sky Sports) to replace dressing room mad Ezgjan Alioski.

Given Marcelo Bielsa’s gung-ho and all-action style, it wasn’t easy to play in this system, especially when you’re a defender, as Firpo found out.

Last season, the 26-year-old had to dive deep alongside his Leeds United team-mates to survive the final day of the Premier League season.

Fast forward to the present, another coach in the dugout, this time Javi Garcia, and the Whites face the same problems.

But as pointed out by former striker Jermaine Beckford, Yorkshire supporters are now starting to see the firpo they expected when he first arrived from Barcelona, as he told Leeds United’s official podcast.

“We see players like Junior Firpo, he’s had a difficult start to his Leeds career,” said Beckford. “The injuries not only shape him, but also the team.

“He’s starting to come into his own. You can see the trust in him. This is the player we originally thought we would sign when he signed from Barcelona.

“We thought we were going to see the control, aggression, passing ability and his sense of position get much, much better as well. You feel a little safer when teams attack on the left flank. You get the feeling he has a good chance of doing something halfway decent here.

“You see that more and more.”

That three-point gap at relegation rivals Wolves was huge for Leeds, the only problem being that the international break had to come between them.

While this win has pushed Garcia’s men out of the drop zone, players and team will be fully aware that even the slightest slip puts them in danger again.

But compared to their peers, there’s a sense that Los Blancos have some momentum as they hope to avoid further drama on the last day of the game to maintain their status in England’s top flight.
