Jeff Bridges reveals his answer when he found out The Big Lebowski was written for him

Jeff Bridges recalls his surprise when Joel and Ethan Coen offered him the lead role in the 1998 crime comedy The big Lebowski, after revealing that they had written the role just for him.

“I met the Coen brothers at a party and they said, ‘Yeah, we’ll write something for you, man,’ and I said, ‘Oh great’ because I saw it blood easy and thought they were great,” he recalled of a recent appearance at the SmartLess podcast.

“And then I got the script and I was like, ‘What? It’s like a high school version of me,” he added. “Are you guys spying on me or something?”

“I have a certain history of trying to get out of roles,” Bridges continued, admitting a tendency to avoid film roles. “I can’t remember what I played just before that.”

“[But] I had never played a role like that.”

Although the film was bombed at the US box office when it premiered, it has since become a cult classic.

In the same interview, Bridges explained that part of his house was once part of the set of one of his films.

The 72-year-old actor explained how the barn “Bordhaus” from director Michael Cimino’s 1980 western works gate of heaven is now part of his home in Montana.

“You should know that Jeff is sitting in one of the tastiest rooms I’ve ever seen,” co-host Jason Bateman said of the lavish space during the podcast. “It looks like a ground floor, it looks like a basement, it has a wooden ceiling.”

After co-host Sean Hayes interjected that it “looks like a set,” Bridges confirmed, “Well it is! You got it, Sean.”

“This is the barn from the brothel of gate of heaven‘ the award-winning actor revealed. Bridges starred in the film alongside a massive cast of stars including Kris Kristofferson, Christopher Walken, John Hurt, Isabelle Huppert and Joseph Cotten. It was Cimino’s sequel to the acclaimed 1978 war drama The deer hunter.

“They wanted to burn the set down because the owner of the property didn’t want it on his property, and Mike was like, ‘Anyone want it?’ and I put up my hand and we numbered the logs and we put it 400 miles south and lined it up.”

“This is where I’ve lived in Montana with my wife for about 40 years,” he added.

In a separate interview in late May, the veteran actor reflected on being “pretty close to dying of Covid” while recovering from cancer.
