Jeann Lugo allegedly attacks state senator hopeful Jennifer Rourke

An off-duty Rhode Island police officer running for state senate has been arrested after allegedly assaulting his female opponent at a pro-choice rally on Friday.

Jeann Lugo, who ran as a Republican, allegedly punched his Democratic rival Jennifer Rourke in the face at least twice, Rourke told the Providence Journal.

Video of the incident shared by Rourke appears to show Senate Hope engaging in a physical altercation at the protest before being hit in the head.

“I am a reproductive rights organizer and a candidate for the State Senate. Last night, after speaking at our Roe rally, my Republican opponent — a police officer — violently assaulted me,” said Rourke, who is vying to represent the 29th district of the state Senate. wrote in a tweet next to the clip.

The video doesn’t show what happened between Lugo, 35, and Rourke, 40, before the altercation.

A Rourke campaign representative told CNBC that she went to the hospital for a CT scan.

Lugo was arrested on Saturday for a simple assault and disorderly conduct, NBC News reported, citing state police. He was charged and released on recognition after surrendering.

He did not deny the attack in a statement to CNBC.

“Unfortunately, as an officer sworn to protect and serve our communities, I found myself in a situation that no individual should see themselves in,” he said.

“I stepped in to protect someone who was being attacked by a group of agitators. An internal investigation is pending at this time and as the facts of the incident are coming to light I am asking for privacy from my family and myself.”

Previously the Providence Police Department announced this on Twitter on Saturday It launched a criminal investigation into the incident and placed Lugo on paid administrative leave “pending a criminal investigation and regulatory review.”

Rourke is seeking the Democratic nomination in September’s primary to run for the Rhode Island State Senate. Lugo fought for the Republican nomination for the same seat.

Early Saturday afternoon, Lugo announced he was ending his bid.

“I will not be running for office this fall,” he said on Twitter before reportedly deactivating his account.

Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza called footage of the attack “immensely disturbing.”

“Those responsible will be held fully accountable,” he added a twitter post.

The altercation took place during a protest outside the Rhode Island State House in Providence prompted by the US Supreme Court, Roe v. Wade overturned – a decision that ended nearly 50 years of federal protection for the US trial.

The decision was handed down Friday morning – more than eight weeks after a draft of the statement was leaked and published by Politico.

In response to the decision, protesters took to the streets across the country on Friday and Saturday.
