FAYETTEVILLE, NC (WNCN) – The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office has charged a Florida woman with assault with a deadly weapon following an incident on I-95 in Godwin.
The sheriff’s office said Arlene Mary Bonitz, a 57-year-old woman of Palm Harbor, Fla., was driving south on I-95 near the 64-mile marker in Godwin just before 4 p.m. on June 26 . They said Bonitz was with a man whom she nursed and supported due to his cognitive delays.
During the drive, the sheriff’s office said Bonitz stabbed the man multiple times with a sharpie pen and then pushed him out of the car. They reported that the car was going 60 miles per hour at the time.
CCSO said Bonitz drove several miles before he was involved in a single vehicular accident. No information was provided as to what led to the Bonitz crash. The North Carolina Highway Patrol responded to the wreck.
The victim and Bonitz were taken to a local medical center for treatment. The victim fractured her pelvis and developed street rash on her face, hands and legs.
Special Victim Detectives arrested Bonitz on July 1 on charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. She received secured bail of $75,000. Bonitz’ first appearance was Tuesday at the Cumberland County Detention Center.
