“I’ve never been to Hillsong”

Chris Pratt recently denied allegations he visited the Hillsong Megachurch, the scandal-ridden institution notorious for alleged anti-LGBTQ views and gay conversion therapy, among other high-profile controversies.

Pratt, 43, denied the allegations during an interview with Men’s Health for its June cover story, saying he’s never been to church and doesn’t know anyone from the house of worship that once drew the likes of Justin Bieber.

“I’ve never been to Hillsong,” said the “Jurassic World” star, who has been the subject of several controversies in recent months.

“I’ve never been to Hillsong. I don’t know anyone from this church.”

In 2019, ‘Umbrella Academy’ star Elliot Page was one of the first to slam Pratt for his alleged ties to Hillsong after ‘Avenger’ star Stephen Colbert appeared to speak about his faith.

“If you’re a famous actor and you belong to an organization that hates a certain group of people, don’t be surprised if someone just wonders why this isn’t addressed.” the actor tweeted, who came out as a trans man in 2020. “Being anti-LGBTQ is wrong, there are no two sides. The damage it causes is severe. Point. I send love to everyone.”

Pratt later responded on Instagram and said the allegations were untrue.

“Recently it has been suggested that I belong to a church that ‘hates people’ and is ‘notorious against LGBTQ people. Nothing is further from the truth. I’m going to a church that opens its doors to absolutely everyone,” the actor said.

Pratt told Men’s Health that the attacks on his faith began after an acceptance speech at the 2018 MTV Movie & TV Awards in which he said, “God is real. God loves you, God wants the best for you. Believe that; I do.”

The Parks and Rec graduate admitted the language might have been too much for some.

“Maybe it was hubris on my part to get up on stage and say the things I said,” he told the magazine. “I’m not sure I touched anyone.”

Unlike Hillsong — whose pastor Brian Houston recently resigned amid many misconduct allegations, all of which the church has denied on multiple occasions — Pratt said he actually attends Zoe Church in Los Angeles.

“Religion has long been f–k oppressive… I think there’s a difference between being religious… and using it to control people, take money from people, abuse children, steal land, justify hatred. Whatever it is,” Pratt told Men’s Health.

“The evil that is in the heart of every human being has crept onto the back of religion and rode along.”

Pratt also spoke about being slammed for a post about his “healthy” daughter while having a son with disabilities.

“I said something like, ‘Find someone who will look at you the way my wife looks at me.’ And then I put some shit in her thing and said, ‘But I love you. I’m so thankful for my wife — she gave me a beautiful, healthy daughter.” And then a couple of articles came out and said, ‘This is so pathetic. I can’t believe Chris Pratt would thank her for that healthy daughter when his first child was born prematurely. It’s such a dig at his ex-wife,” he said.

“That’s fucked up. My son will read this one day. he is nine And it’s set in digital stone. It fucking bothered me, dude. I cried about it. I thought I hate that these blessings in my life are a real drain on the people close to me.”
