ITV’s Deep Fake Neighbor Wars trailer is the most disturbing thing you’re about to see today

I saw a few things this morning that I never thought I would see. Olivia Colman and Jay-Z recline on a sofa together. Greta Thunberg wears an ‘I heart Southend on Sea’ t-shirt. Kim Kardashian and Ariana Grande in safety vests. Adele looks upset in a fleece, with a lanyard around her neck. The list goes on.

All of these surreal sights were featured in the trailer for ITV’s wacky (and surely legally questionable?!) new series Deep fake neighborhood wars.

It’s billed as a comedy impressions show, which will air in January 2023 on the broadcaster’s new streaming service, ITVX.

The six-part, according to ITV, is “the world’s first long-form narrative show to use deepfake technology to turn Britain’s best New Impressionists into the world’s most famous celebrities”.

In the show, which looks like it was shot mockumentary-style, stars from Tom Holland to Chris Rock are portrayed as ordinary people caught up in arguments with their neighbors.

Some of the deepfakes are eerily convincing, others — I look at you, silver-haired Stormzy and a version of Harry Kane that doesn’t resemble a human — seem to have dropped around the factory floor a few times.

Even the only dialogue revealed so far doesn’t offer many clues as to what storylines to expect. An oddly youthful Jay-Z says, “Technology…amazing” for no apparent reason. A slightly bloated Matthew McConaughey says to the camera, “Alright, alright, alright. Now we have fun.”

It remains to be seen what this show means for the future of authenticity, truth, humanity! All we know for now is that it’s probably the most unsettling thing you’ll see all day. ITV’s Deep Fake Neighbor Wars trailer is the most disturbing thing you’re about to see today
