From the porn set to the pulpit.
A former adult entertainer now works as a preacher after ending his kinky career making X-rated movies.
Joshua Broomewho has made more than 1,000 raunchy films under the alias Rocco Reed, left the straight and gay-for-pay porn industry in 2012, claiming it caused him “enormous emotional trauma.”
“I’ve literally lost track of who I am,” Broome told The Post on Tuesday. “It was all lies and fiction … I wanted to take my own life and didn’t have the courage to do so.”
Broome, now 39, entered the porn industry after moving to Hollywood in his early 20s with hopes of becoming an actor.
While working as a waiter, Broome had a chance encounter with a group of women who insisted a porn scene would improve his chances of becoming a movie star. He took her recommendation and was cast in an adult film just days later.
Soon, Broome, then 23, was filming dozens of scenes a month and quickly becoming one of the industry’s most popular male stars — but fulfillment didn’t follow.
“I believed the lie that I would be happy if I made money,” Broome told the Post. “I’ve made well over a million dollars. I traveled anywhere I wanted. I had all the sex I could have ever imagined. But once I had it all, my life fell apart because it added to the sadness and emptiness I always felt inside.”
Broome shocked industry insiders when he abruptly left the industry in 2012 after six years of making hot films.
In a statement released at the time, Broome explained: “I would like to say that my time in the adult industry in every respect is now over… I would also like to say that I am not gay or never have been, just an adult performer. I’m retiring for no other reason than that it’s time to move on.”
Broome left Los Angeles and moved to North Carolina. He says he’s struggled with depression and was “riddled with shame” as he tried to hide his past career while working at a gym.
Then, in 2014, he met a woman named Hope at the gym, and the two decided to run together.
At the outing, Broome admitted his past in porn and was stunned that Hope refused to judge him.
“She piqued my curiosity by being so kind and not rejecting me,” Broome said. “The next weekend we went to church together.”
The porn star suddenly experienced a spiritual awakening and found a fulfillment that the glitz and glamor of the porn world could not offer.
“I gave up a life of shame. I’ve lived with an ‘I’m not good enough’ mentality my whole life and I’ve been able to let go of it,” he said of his newfound Christian faith.
Broome studied biblical theology before marrying Hope in 2016. The couple now have three young sons together.
Broome currently pastors Good News Baptist Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and also teaches and preaches across the country.
The former adult entertainer also opens up about the dangers of porn.
“It’s so damaging,” he told the Post. “They say it’s okay to consume a person like a product, and if you treat people like products, every aspect of your life will be adversely affected.”
The preacher tells listeners it’s never too late to change paths in life and says his extraordinary journey from porn star to pastor is a testament to himself.
“It’s never too late to change what you do,” he continued. “Will it take hard work? Yes. will it last Yes. Will it be worth it? Absolutely.”
The star says he no longer feels burdened by the shame of his earlier career and his family life is “amazing”.
“I’ve built a life to be proud of and when I lay my head on the pillow at night I have no shame or guilt,” Broome told the Post. “You can allow your past to own you, or you can take control and own your past.”
