(WJZY) – District 11 Rep. Madison Cawthorn, who lost Tuesday’s Republican primary to Chuck Edwards, has issued a statement following his loss … and he’s furious.
Cawthorn, who was the subject of personal and professional controversy during his first year in Congress, took to Instagram to call out war to his enemies and praise those who stood by him while “the establishment turned their guns on him.”
“The time for gentile politics as usual is over,” Cawthorn said in an Instagram post. “It’s time for the rise of the new right, it’s time for Dark MAGA to really take charge. We must defeat an enemy, but we will never be able to defeat him until we have defeated the cowardly and weak members of our own party. Your days are numbered. We come.”
Cawthorn named the likes of Tucker Carlson, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Matt Gaetz, former President Donald Trump, Steve Bannon, and even the entire National Rifle Association as “friends” who are “America First Patriots.” Trump was reportedly “disappointed” by all the controversy surrounding Cawthorn.
“These are honorable men and women who are the kind of friends everyone longs for… These are rare and hated men/women,” Cawthorn said.
Cawthorn lost his seat in Congress by around 1,300 votes. Republican Senator Thom Tillis and many leading Republicans in Raleigh actively worked to defeat Cawthorn and attempted to get Edwards to the election. Even state Democrats had planned to vote Republicans to oust Cawthorn.
Voters had previously tried to bar him from voting for his alleged involvement in the Jan. 6, 2020 U.S. Capitol riot, but the challenge was blocked by a district court judge. Cawthorn filed a lawsuit in federal court for an attempt to disqualify him from racing.
Cawthorn’s series of controversies include bringing loaded guns to airports; inappropriate and controversial statements on the floor of the House of Representatives; to talk about “nuclear family” during his divorce; speeding and driving with a suspended license; secretly recorded telephone conversations; possible insider trading; calling the President of Ukraine a “thug”; as well as photos and videos that have shown Cawthorn in unflattering and compromising situations, including wearing lingerie and having sex.
Cawthorn also made national headlines for making unsubstantiated claims about members of his own party inviting him to “orgies” and “cocaine use.”
Around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday night, Cawthorn told a crowded room he was confident the remaining ballots that needed to be counted would be in his favor and help him win re-election. However, statisticians told Queen City News that Cawthorn needed a miracle to win.
After his loss, Cawthorn abruptly went home for the night and made no testimony of the loss. A spokesman for Cawthorn spoke on his behalf and announced that he called Chuck Edwards to relent. He is later said to have congratulated Edwards on his victory.
