Good morning football fans

Wales have set foot on World Cup victory after beating Austria 2-1 in the playoffs.

An impressive brace from Gareth Bale ensured Wales slipped past a strong Austrian side.

Bale grabbed a stunning free-kick in the first half before complementing his magic with a great punch in the second half.

Wales are now 6-4 ahead of bookmaker Coral to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar later this year after beating Austria in Cardiff tonight.

Portugal were also victorious, beating Turkey 3-1 in the playoffs.

Goals from Otavio, Diogo Jota and Matheus Nunes were enough to propel Portugal through.

Although they had a late scare when Turkey missed a last-minute penalty before Nunes scored Portugal’s third.

However, Wales and Portugal will not be included in the finals by Italy, who were forced off the pitch after a surprise 1-0 defeat by North Macedonia.

Italy’s World Cup dreams were shattered when the Macedonians scored a winner in the final minutes of added time.

Roberto Mancini’s side left the pitch to boos and jeers from fans as Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup for the second straight season.

The Czech Republic will also miss the World Cup after being beaten 1-0 by Sweden in the final stages of extra time.

The two nations were close to a penalty shoot-out when Robin Quaison scored from close range with a low shot.

The Swedes managed without the suspended Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who was full of praise for compatriot Anthony Elanga before the game.

Ibrahimovic said of the Man United starlet: “He’s a huge talent – we’re proud and happy he’s from Sweden.

“He has the whole future ahead of him and if he continues like this, things are looking positive.”

After all, Portugal now face North Macedonia in the finals, while Wales have to wait for the play-off clash between Scotland and Ukraine.

The tie was pushed back to June after Russia invaded Ukraine, but Scotland boss Steve Clarke doubts that will be the case.

In the other play-off final, Sweden meets Poland, with all games to be played on Tuesday 29 March. Italy after losing to North Macedonia from the World Cup, Portugal in the final
