A 24-year-old Israeli police officer was stabbed in the neck with a knife outside Jerusalem’s Old City on Sunday, officials said.
His attacker, a Palestinian teenager, was shot dead by Israeli police officers nearby, police said.
The officer was “moderately injured” while the suspect is in serious condition, authorities said.
The wounded policeman was interrogating the 19-year-old suspect in a police booth at the Damascus Gate entrance to the Old City when the officer was stabbed, the Times of Israel reported.
The officer was conscious when colleagues saw him lying on the cabin steps and immediately took him to a nearby hospital.
A witness claimed police fired at least seven shots at the officer’s suspected attacker, Haaretz said.
The Israel-based Civil Rights Association has called Israeli police multiple times over “inappropriate police conduct” and “brutality” at the Damascus Gate, urging police officers to “curb the excessive force they are using against Palestinians” in the area.
The area is an important landmark for Palestinians and residents of East Jerusalem and a traditional meeting place.
