COLUMBUS, Ohio — Brock Nelson scored his 32nd goal of his career, Semyon Varlamov made 42 saves and the New York Islanders beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-3 Tuesday night.
Josh Bailey, Anthony Beauvillier and Zach Parise also scored as the Islanders suffered a slip in two games. New York moved within two points of Columbus in the standings, but both teams are well behind Washington for the last Eastern Conference wildcard spot.
Vladimir Gavrikov scored twice for Columbus, who lost their fourth straight win. Oliver Björkstrand also scored and Elvis Merzlikins stopped 25 shots. The Blue Jackets played without coach Brad Larsen, who entered COVID-19 protocol early Tuesday along with assistant Steve McCarthy.
Gavrikov replaced a ricocheted puck after Patrik Laine’s rifle shot fired from the blue line at 7:20 of the opening period.
Sixteen seconds after a power play, Nelson Merzlikins batted from the far edge of the right circle to level the game. Bailey got a feed from Jean-Gabriel Pageau from low position to give the Islanders a 2-1 lead late in the first game.
Anthony Beauvillier slammed into the net early in the second half against Merzlikins, and Parise tapped in a pass from Noah Dobson to put New York’s lead 4-1.
