Current-gen consoles have been out for almost a year and a half, so you might be wondering whether it is still worth buying a PS4 in 2022. After all, the PS5 can do everything the PS4 can and then some. We’ll look at what, if any, reasons there are to buy a PS4 now.
Is it worth buying a PS4 in 2022?
There are two conditions that make buying a PS4 worthwhile in 2022:
- You can’t find a PS5 and you haven’t owned a PS4.
- You get a really good deal.
Despite the PS5 launching back in November 2020, it’s still hard to find one at retail prices. Therefore, many people have been waiting to buy. However, inventories have not yet returned to normal. As a result, those who didn’t own a PS4 and chose to wait are missing out on a fantastic library of games.
However, even if you decide to buy a PS4, there are some limitations. The best model, the PlayStation 4 Pro, is no longer in production. Sony stopped manufacturing this console at the end of 2020 and there are little to no leftover stocks. So you can assume that you will have to pay a premium for it in many online shops.
The only version of the console still in production is the PS4 Slim. Unfortunately, it’s limited to 1080p, and you’ll need a PS4 Pro or PS5 to play in ultra-high definition. Finding even the Slim is difficult, and Amazon sellers are driving the price down, charging nearly double the MSRP.
So buying a PS4 in 2022 is only worth it if you can find a good deal on a PS4 Pro. Sellers on eBay have some decent deals on refurbished models at the time of writing, so it shouldn’t be too hard to find one that works for you. Otherwise, we’d just save our money for a PS5.
