AUSTIN (KXAN) – From Muhammad Ali’s combat boots worn from The Thrilla in Manila to Ringo Starr’s Beatles drum kits used in “The Ed Sullivan Show,” American pop culture and historical sites will on display in downtown Austin on Thursday night.
Memorabilia belonging to the owner and CEO of the Indianapolis Colts Jim Irsay’s Personal Collection includes entries in a variety of genres, from music and popular culture to sports and American history.
The private event will feature the following artifacts, among others:
- John Lennon’s Sunglasses, Bust
- Jerry Garcia’s 1979 Doug Irwin “Tiger” guitar
- The guitar of the golden cloud prince
- Muhammad Ali’s Worn Battle Shoes, The Thrilla in Manila
- Original Manuscript of “The Big Book” Alcoholic ”
- Letters signed by former US Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln
Along with the monuments, the event will also feature music by the Jim Irsay Band with Mike Wanchic (John Mellencamp) playing guitar; Mike Mills (REM) on bass; Tom Bukovac on the guitar; Kenny Wayne Shepherd on blues guitar; Kenny Aronoff (Sir Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones) plays drums and Austin-born Michael Ramos (John Mellencamp, Los Lonely Boys) plays keys.
Austin is the newest stop for Irsay’s collection. He recently displayed items while previewing exhibits in Nashville and Washington, D.C. Irsay is procuring locations for a permanent museum complex to display his collection.
