KATE Garraway has revealed that she’s worried she’ll eventually run out of money to pay for her husband Derek Draper’s round-the-clock care.
The 54-year-old made the confession while appearing on This Morning to talk about her recent documentary, Caring for Derek.
In Good Morning Britain, presenter Kate is seen adjusting to their new lifestyle, after Derek, 54, was hospitalized for more than a year after contracting Covid in March 2020.
Speaking to Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield, Kate praised the full-time carers who are helping her with Derek’s needs.
“That’s what really impressed me,” Holly said, “is the level of care he needs. It’s like this around the clock, isn’t it?”
Kate replied: “Yes and because of his extreme health needs he is in 24-hour care so someone has to stay up at night and someone has to stay up during the day and I can’t stay up 24 hours because So it’s great to have that.”
Phil then mentioned Kate and Derek’s trip to Mexico to see a therapist, and she continued: “It came so low when I thought, ‘oh my god, this isn’t durable.
“System, I mean I don’t believe we can have 24-hour care forever, you know, money’s gone!
“It was a pivotal moment, I thought, ‘this is not sustainable’ and if there’s no structure there to help long-term, what are we really going to do? Because we can’t just give up. leave him.”
After his hospital stay – while he was in a coma – Derek remained very ill after suffering organ failure and a blood clot on his lungs.
But Kate still doesn’t have a unified diagnosis of exactly what Covid has done to Derek’s brain and body because experts still don’t fully understand the long-term effects of the virus.
He will probably never walk again because the tendons and muscles in his legs have contracted from being in a coma for so long.
