Lowy told The Sun: “It depends on how often you use the items. “I like to use hangers for things that you are looking for on a regular basis. If you haven’t worn things for a while, it’s easier to fold them up and put them in storage.”

When it comes hangersShe says that using it properly can prolong the life of your clothes.

Thick wooden hangers that provide shoulder support are the best choice, especially for heavier clothes.

If your clothes are being stored in a smaller space with items like larger coats, chrome hangers are a good and sturdy alternative with their rounded edges.

Hanging thick coats on two weaker hangers together is a perfect option for working with things already in your wardrobe.

She also recommends leaving space in your closet for your clothes to breathe.

“I’d say there are 10 to 15 smaller items per foot, and if you’re doing something like jackets and coats, depending on the size, there are 5 to 10 items per foot then the ratio better to use,” Lowy said.

However, she recommends folding items like sweaters rather than leaving them on hangers to increase their lifespan.

But if you prefer to hang them, then using the right mount is very important.

“Assuming you have a fleece sweater that you absolutely love, if you hang it on an actual horsehair hanger for a few months, that can damage the shoulders,” says Lowy. “If you use the right hanger, you can wear that sweater for years.”

As winter ends and spring approaches, Lowy says to store zipped and buttoned jackets after washing to keep them in shape.

“Oil and dirt from the outside world and the oil that gets from your skin can attract bugs and moths and that kind of thing,” she says.
