The entrepreneur realised her sex drive had deteriorated despite still fancying partner Danny Pagdett, 49, a landscape gardener.

So Maria, 43, took matters into her own hands by trying “female Viagra” pills.

Maria, who owns her own wellness business Enaiya, says: “Before, I didn’t have any appetite for sex. Being a mum of three and a business owner, I have to pack a lot in and would feel exhausted by the end of the day, even though I’m a fit, active person.

“I love Danny and find him attractive, but life gets in the way. Sex wasn’t in the forefront of my mind and hadn’t been for a couple of years at least.

“We were having sex maybe twice a month, and our libidos were mismatched. If I had been game every night then Danny would have been too, but that wasn’t the case. I know Danny felt frustrated at times and I didn’t want it to cause issues in our relationship or make him tempted to look elsewhere.”

She discovered sex supplement Elle Sera through a friend and was drawn in by claims online it could improve libido and low mood — including stress, anxiety.

‘Orgasms are more explosive’

The pill is a mix of five botanical substances — beetroot, ginkgo leaf, Siberian ginseng, natural maca extract and tribulus terrestris extract. Creators claim the tablets have “energy-boosting properties” and recommend taking two capsules in the morning with food.

Maria — originally from Lytham, Lancs, but who lives near Alicante, Spain — says: “I could relate to the symptoms they were addressing and was desperate to see if the pills worked. Within three months, I felt like a different person. Now we have sex every week.

“Before I was never in the mood for sex — sleep seemed like the priority — but with the pills it’s easier to get aroused. I was always pushing it to the side because life got in the way, but the supplements have made me feel more alive, so now I make more effort.

“It’s reignited our sex life. My libido is higher, my orgasms are more intense, they feel explosive. We’ve always had amazing sex but these pills enhance it.”

Maria married Danny in July 2003, but by 2007 they had split. Five years later they picked up where they had left off — though never remarried. They are parents to Daniel, 18, Enya, 17, and Tristan, 15. Maria says: “We’ve got chaotic lives and three teenagers but now we are more conscious to make time to be intimate. The supplements have given me more energy and made me feel better about myself, which helps me get in the mood.”

Maria is not the only one getting a helping hand between the sheets, with forecasters predicting the industry could be worth £57billion by 2028.

Getting in on the action, actress-turned-wellness guru Gwyneth Paltrow, 49, launched her own line of sex-boosting supplements for women last October.

Called Down To F***, or DTF, the £41 bottle of tablets is sold on her lifestyle website Goop and customers are advised to take two pills per day for “at least two months”. Meanwhile, sales of pill Elle Sera, French for “she will be”, skyrocketed by 400 per cent in the last lockdown.

I feel like a new woman. It has been life-changing for me.

It costs £74.99 for a 30-day supply and is available at Selfridges, or you can pay £45 for a subscription online.

The tablets contain tribulus terrestris, which recent medical studies have shown increasing women’s sex drive by boosting receptors that help the body respond positively to hormones, and increasing nitric oxide, which is critical to sexual arousal.

It also benefits that beetroot athletic performance, gingko combats claims anxiety, ginseng benefits the body’s immune system and maca responds orgasms.

Studies have found low sex drive in women can be the result of hormonal imbalances — especially during menopause. Maria is perimenopausal and says: “The biggest thing for me was my mood swings.

“The libido enhancement was a massive bonus, but it wasn’t what drew me in. I needed to balance my moods and that was the first change both my partner and I noticed.

“Then I started sleeping better, I had more energy, I was more alert, I was less anxious. I’d also had issues with hormonal weight gain which are now under control.

“I’ve lost more than half a stone through exercising and fasting but taking Elle Sera helped. Body confidence is a big thing for women and helps you feel better in all aspects of yourself. I feel healthier and sexier. It’s an awful feeling when your hormones are all over the place, you feel like you have lost a part of yourself.

“Now I feel like a new woman. It has been life-changing for me.” Danny says: “I’ve definitely noticed a change in Maria — her mood swings are in check, she’s calmer and less agitated. I have no complaints about our sex life — in fact the opposite, so it’s all good.”

‘Not enough evidence’ to suggest tablet will boost desire

The Sun’s Dr Carol Cooper

MANY of the ingredients in Elle Sera have a reputation for helping with sexual difficulties, but most of that is based on hearsay.

There’s not enough good evidence to recommend their use in this way. What’s more, herbs like ginkgo and ginseng can have serious side-effects, especially in larger doses.

In times of stress such as the current pandemic, it’s normal to lose interest in sex. You could say it’s nature’s way of keeping you focused on survival.

It’s worth trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle in terms of diet and exercise, rather than putting all your hopes and money into unproven remedies.

Incidentally, Viagra is often said to enhance sex drive in men, but it really doesn’t. It can help performance once aroused, but has no effect on desire.
