I’m a famous barber and you washed your hair wrong…there’s an easy way to prevent it from drying out

With hair trends changing, it’s no wonder our hair might be a little lackluster – but one important thing to keep in mind is the way we wash our hair.

Be sure to experiment with your hair, but over-styling and over-dyeing can leave you with dry and damaged hair.

That doesn’t mean you have to ask for the chop just yet, though.

Here are some expert tips from Tyson Grant, owner and creative director at Forbici Londonexplained how to repair dry and damaged hair.

Use the right shampoo and conditioner

Treat your hair as you would treat your face, choose an appropriate shampoo and conditioner to keep your hair in the best possible condition.

Nine times out of ten, just using the right product will noticeably improve the condition of your hair.

Choose a Sulfate-free shampoo formulated for damaged hair such as Moroccanoil Moisturizing Shampoo.

Sulfates are common foaming agents found in shampoos to impart a bubbly, sudsy texture that can rob moisture and leave the scalp dry and prone to irritation.

Sticking to shampoos that contain ingredients of natural origin will help repair your damaged hair.

Avoid washing your hair too often

Try to avoid shampooing too frequently, as this can lead to stray, straw-like hair and scalp inflammation.

Unfortunately, there is no right answer to how often you should wash as every hair type is different.

Work with your own hair type and lifestyle factors.

For example, if you exercise a lot, you may need to wash your hair more often than someone who doesn’t.

The most important thing is to use a good shampoo and conditioner that doesn’t strip your natural oils.

If your hair and scalp need a refresher, you can always try a dry shampoo on the second or third day.

Finally, wash your hair with lukewarm or cold water and finish the shampooing process with a dash of cold water.

Cool or cold water can help damaged hair by closing the hair cuticle and causing the hair shaft to lie flat, resulting in shinier, straighter hair.

Be careful with wet hair

All hair is most vulnerable when wet.

The potential for damage really increases when your wet hair is fine, curly, or brittle. So handle it with care.

Never attempt to run a brush through your wet hair unless it’s a brush specifically designed for the task.

I would recommend using a wide-toothed comb to detangle. When you step out of the shower, refrain from vigorous rubbing.

Instead, gently pat your hair dry with a fluffy towel, or even better, a microfiber towel or soft t-shirt. This avoids friction that can stress damaged hair.

Also, don’t secure your hair with a rubber band when it’s wet—this can cause hair breakage.

Be sparing with the styling tools

Hair is made up almost entirely of proteins, and heat styling damages these proteins.

If possible, give your styling tools and hair dryer a break.

Perhaps embrace a textured ponytail or a chic bun.

If you really can’t do without your beloved hair tools, use a heat protectant spray and lower the temperature on the dial, because the higher the heat, the more damage will be done.

Use a good hair mask

Richer than your average conditioner, a good hair mask can nourish, repair and restore luminosity to keep your hair looking its best. This is thanks to the high concentrations of repairing and moisturizing ingredients such as vitamins and oils.

They’re also thicker than traditional conditioners, so they stay put when applied to damp hair.

This gives these formulas time to penetrate deeper into the hair’s surface and fill in the gaps and nicks that form on the surface of damaged hair.

Masks work even after rinsing off. Even if your hair is in good condition, it’s a good idea to use a mask weekly to keep hair super hydrated.
