I’m a dog trainer – these are the best breeds for apartments

This is the ultimate list for apartment renters.

Florida dog trainer Garret Wing says pugs, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Shih Tzus are ideal for living in small spaces.

“The reason we choose these breeds over other smaller dog breeds is because these dogs aren’t as cheerful and won’t upset your neighbors,” said Wing, owner and founder of American Standard Dog Training the daily mail in an interview published on Saturday.

Pugs get first place because “they’re small, they’re friendly, they don’t bark a lot, and they don’t require a lot of exercise,” Wing explained in a 35-second clip that was released to Tiktok March.

Most pugs stand 10 to 13 inches tall and weigh between 14 and 18 pounds. They were considered “the mischievous companion of Chinese emperors and later the mascot of the Dutch royal house of Orange,” according to the newspaper American Kennel Club.

The Cavalier King Charles, on the other hand, is “very friendly with other dogs and pets and is great with older people who may live in an apartment,” Wing said.

This toy spaniel breed with British roots typically weighs between 13 and 18 pounds and reaches a height of 13 inches.

The Shih Tzu ranks third because they are “a small, easy-to-train dog that really enjoys being with their owners and also socializing with other people and dogs.”

Sometimes referred to as “little lion dogs,” Shih Tzus can weigh from 9 to 16 pounds.

The three breeds’ small stature makes physical activity difficult for them, and they can tire quickly on a short walk.

Stairs can also be a problem.

“Climbing and descending the stairs can put a lot of strain on their shoulders and hips, so either carry them or take them in the elevator,” Wing told the Daily Mail.

Wing received rave feedback on his TikTok clip, which garnered nearly 460,000 views.

“My shih tzu rarely barks, only when he’s playing or we’re eating pizza πŸ˜…,” shared one person.

“My shihtzu barks at anything that moves or makes a sound,” disagreed another. “Shih Tsu are doorbell dogs 🐢 they bark every time.”

“Cavalier King Charles is so good with children and so gentle,” explained a third.

Some pug owners expressed surprise that their breed had made the wing list.

“My boobs are barking! A lot! About every little noise πŸ˜‚ you just have to put on a cup too hard and it sets it off,” admitted one.

“My pug is louder than my brothers fight,” one viewer joked.

Others argued their dog deserved a spot.

“The Italian Greyhound! I have 2 in my apartment! They don’t say a peep, can be trained to use a litter box and are content to sleep all day!” explained one dog mom.

“I have a French bulldog and he is a great apartment dog, he loves to sleep 80% of the day,” pointed out another owner.

In a separate videoAccording to Wing, the worst dogs for renters are the Border Collie, the Australian Cattle Dog, and the Jack Russell Terrier.
