Alcohol prices are rising nationwide, even reaching the Big Apple’s bootleg market, as Nutcrackers — an illegal alcoholic beverage sold by park and beach vendors in New York — skyrocket to $15 a bottle.
Kareem Middleton, a salesman in Bed-Stuy, used to be the summer favorite since the 1990s — a concoction of fruit juice and spirits in a plastic bottle sold by dealers in 8-ounce bottles for $5 or 12-ounce bottles for $5 $10 was sold, the Post said.
But on Sunday, Sydney Pereira, a journalist at Hell Gate, tweeted that she saw it the under-the-radar drink sold at a 50% premium in Prospect Park.
Of course, New Yorkers are panicking. But some say this alcohol inflation has been rising for some time.
“This has been happening since last summer and it’s upsetting me and my homegirls,” tweeted Naomi Ramble.
Some were also quick to shout as the battered United States economy waltzed to the cocktail bar prices near their home with the Nutcracker waltz.
“Everything you need to know about the rightness of a recession is right here.” wrote Vanessa Parra.
However, the affordability of nutcrackers is an issue that has been driving locals insane for some time. According to Twitter user Mario Ismailanji, even $10 used to be astronomical.
“Wow. I remember when these were like $5.” he posted.
Rest assured, though, nutcrackers aren’t selling to record highs across the city—yet.

Due to pandemic supply shortages, alcohol costs have skyrocketed nationwide at rates that would leave anyone in an intoxicated state.
In January, Corona and Modelo announced they expect prices to rise 2% due to glass shortages, and breweries across the country have also had to raise prices to counter rising aluminum prices.
Last fall, imported wine in New York was uncorked at above-average prices due to the cost of transportation.
