CREDIT can make or break your future is a lesson from Dallas-based entrepreneur Arnita Johnson-Hall.

The founder of AMB Credit Consultants shared how she turned her low credit score into a big business opportunity.

Johnson-Hall recently spoke with CNBC and said it was 2007 when she received a wake-up call that would change her life.

At the time, she was only earning a $12 hourly job, when an opportunity with a starting salary of $60,000 came her way.

Everything seemed to be turning around, until that opportunity passed. Her downfall, it turned out, was her low credit score of 303.

How did she start her side hustle

This rejection is the ultimate motivator.

Johnson-Hall bent down, studied her credit reports, corrected mistakes with each credit bureau, and set herself on a tight budget.

Her credit score increased by 100 points in six months.

After this experience, she realized what she was doing for herself, she could do for others, and her life hustling with her had begun.

Reach 1 million dollars in sales

Johnson-Hall started by helping family and friends improve their credit records.

In late 2007, she bought a website and named her business AMB Credit Consultants.

Business was slow at first. Her first product was a free counseling program and a six-month credit education program, which she marketed for $149.

She stuck with it, becoming a Board Certified Credit Counselor and gradually promoting more on social media.

Fast forward to 2016 and AMB Credit Consultants brought in $1.1 million in total revenue.

Building a business

Once Johnson-Hall got the capital, her business grew into a full-fledged enterprise.

In 2013, she started advertising on Luxury credita blog that offers free credit advice to readers and sells financial literacy books.

Then Johnson-Hall came out Luxury lifestyle plannera product line of magazines with useful tools for budgeting.

Her business currently has 10 employees.

In 2021, she worked with 672 clients.

Her advice for starting a business

Make your story part of your brand. “A big part of my AMB brand story is my triumph over low credit scores and financial instability,” Johnson-Hall told CNBC.

Be specific about who you can help. “Initially, my mission was to help anyone. Then I realized that I know what it feels like to be a young, black single mother with government help, so I have a a unique ability to help those women,” explained Johnson-Hall.

Community focus. Johnson-Hall spends a lot of time and effort connecting with individual followers. As she says, “Having a huge social media following isn’t enough. You have to build a supportive community by engaging with your followers, responding to their needs, and falling in love. ask for feedback.”
