A HUGE man has been fined for accidentally driving into the “smallest bus lane in London” just 11 meters long.
Geoffrey Ben-Nathan, 77, was ticketed for driving across the 39-foot bus lane on Harrow’s Northolt Road.
He said the sign before reaching the bus lane was “unclear” and would lead to more people being fined.
Most bus lanes along Northolt Road are restricted at certain times of the day – but this becomes a 24/7 restriction for the small stretch at the intersection with Alexandra Avenue.
Geoffrey has called on Harrow Council to remove the 24-hour bus lane or at least make the warnings for drivers clearer.
“It is difficult to see what the bus lane serves,” he said. There are no lanes at all – it’s really a box along one side of a small triangular island.
“It has to be the smallest bus lane in London.
“I measured it and it was just over 39 feet long. Only a bus could fit it in.
“And it has no regulatory warning signs instructing drivers to change lanes. I’ve never seen a sign like it – it could be unique. ”
Geoffrey, who lives in Northwick Park, took the case to trial court, where the judges ruled in his favor.
He gave evidence of several other drivers who also fell into the same situation, who also successfully appealed their fines.
He suggested that the council was happy to keep the bus lane intact, even if it lost a few cases, as most people would “pay”.
He said that measures need to be put in place to make the situation more clear to drivers, especially if this is a problem point.
“One answer is that councils are placed under the statutory responsibility to flag all offenses much higher than average: it could be that they are in a traffic lane offense,” says Geoffrey. bus or violation in any other location.
“Ethically, the responsibility should lie with councils to stop motorists from breaking their driving regulations.
“This is not the case at the moment.”
Harrow Council has been contacted for comment.
Asked about a similar case in January 2020, a spokesman for the council said: “The law is very clear – you cannot drive in a bus lane at any point with a white line. immediately.
“We are of the opinion that the sign is valid and clear in accordance with the law.”
