A HORRIFIED woman shared how she went vegan after finding a chicken leg in her meal from Lidl.
Mercedes Checkley was shocked after she discovered a leg in the £3.99 chicken she bought for Sunday dinner with her friends.
The woman said that her illness forced her to completely change her eating habits and switch to a vegetarian diet. Bristol Live reported.
“Honestly, I didn’t even handle it at first,” she said.
“My housemate heard me make a weird noise and she knew something was wrong.
“I thought it was the shock. At first I didn’t believe it and it was almost funny because I was shocked but then reality hit and I was so faint and sick.
“I haven’t eaten since then and now I’m really anorexic.
“I’m in pain because roast dinner is my favorite and one of my safe meals because I have an intestinal condition so this incident has made me afraid of meat and therefore I am quite limited in what I eat. I can eat.”
Mercedes finished her shift and prepared meals for her housemate Amy, her boyfriend, and his best friend.
After buying all the ingredients at the supermarket, she put the chicken in the oven.
But this discovery influenced her so much that she decided to give up meat altogether.
She added: “Others ate vegetables, baked potatoes, honey-roasted beets, pigs in blankets, cauliflower cheese and Yorkshire pudding that I made to go with the chicken.
“I ate a few beets and some cauliflower cheese but that was all I could give my stomach because I wasn’t feeling well physically.
“My body was shaking and I felt very weak, I couldn’t eat after being sick but had to force myself to eat a few bites because I hadn’t eaten all day.
“I’ll absolutely never eat meat again. Every time I’ve been in the kitchen since it happened, I’ve vomited.”
She sent a formal complaint to Lidl, who contacted the supplier.
She is said to expect a response in ten days.
A Lidl spokesperson said: “We are very sorry to hear about this, as it was never our intention to leave a customer unhappy in any way.
“We work very closely with our suppliers to ensure that the fresh meat we supply is of the highest possible quality for our customers.
“We are therefore very disappointed that our high standards have not been met on this occasion.
“After contacting our customer service team, the matter was referred to our Suppliers and Quality Assurance department for a full investigation.
“We’re in direct contact with the client and will keep them updated on the final results.”
