I had “painful experience” filming the “Barbie” movie

In the run-up to filming “Barbie” for Simu Liu, it certainly wasn’t “fantastic.”

The 33-year-old Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star revealed that he underwent a painful makeover for the upcoming film and confessed he had to grow all his body hair.

“Waxing was an education, to say the least,” Liu told the Independent in a new profile. “It was one of the most painful experiences of my life.”

The Canadian native continued, “I have such a newfound admiration for the incredibly brave women who go through this on a monthly basis.”

Warner Bros. posted a first look image by Margot Robbie, who smiled on set in a pink convertible last month.

Robbie, 31, stars as a live-action version of Mattel’s blonde plastic character alongside Liu, America Ferrara, Ryan Gosling as her toy boy Ken, as well as Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp and Will Ferrell.

Liu also gushed about the fans’ love for the film, noting that he’s excited for viewers to see it on the big screen next summer.

“Honestly, online discourse gives me life,” he said. “With every casting announcement or piece of news, they’re like, ‘What is this?’ And that’s perfect – the less you know about it, the better.”

The memoirist of ‘We Were Dreamers: An Immigrant Superhero Origin Story’ told GQ UK earlier this month that his agent helped him fall in love with the ‘Barbie’ script because he said the ‘Barbie’ -Screenplay is said to be one of the best screenplays his agent has ever read and passed on to Liu.

“He literally said that, literally,” Liu explained. “He was like, ‘If I could build my career on one script, it would be the ‘Barbie’ script. I really think you should.'”

The Kim’s Convenience actor auditioned for director and writer Greta Gerwig, who is co-writing the project with filmmaker and partner Noah Baumbach.

The 38-year-old director of Little Women then invited Liu to a meeting, where she discussed how “she loved watching men dance because it’s such an expression of artistry that you don’t get from typical men is used to. ” He revealed that he had worked with a hip-hop dance group in the past.

He added that Gerwig “laughed audibly, she giggled and screamed — and then I got the part.”

Barbie is slated to hit theaters on July 21, 2023.
