‘I got some interesting feedback from women’: Tim Minchin discusses song about wanting to ‘fuck somebody’

Tim Minchin has spoken out about a song on his latest album which, as he put it, is about wanting to “fuck someone”.

The musician and comedian’s 2020 album, Together apartIt includes the song “If I Didn’t Have You,” in which the Australian singer sang of his two-decade marriage to wife Sarah, “Our love is one in a million.”

Then, in a later song titled “I’ll Take Lonely Tonight,” he describes the struggles of monogamy and resisting the urge to forego having sex with “one of the others I swore I’d have.”

“I got some interesting feedback from women when this came out,” Minchin said iNewsin a new interview published on Wednesday, November 23.

“Some were sobbing because it was so beautiful. Other women said, “So you didn’t fuck anyone. What do you want? A medal?'”

He explained that he “learned all about the femme fatale myth in college. I know that historically we have wrongly portrayed women as seducers and men as victims.

“But just because we have a more educated lens through which to understand how we’ve treated women doesn’t mean you don’t get into a situation where you really, really, really want to fuck someone. Whether you are a man or a woman.”

Minchin went on to describe his experience of sexual desire as “one of the strongest feelings in the world,” sharing that he’s “wired” to be in those situations as if he were “enchanted or poisoned.”

“My brain is screaming, ‘DO THIS! THAT’S ALL YOU WANT TO DO!’ Certainly there is a way to confidently say so,” he said.

Minchin added: “Fame changes you. My mother says I’ve changed and she’s right. It doesn’t surprise me that so many famous people end up doing cocaine and acting like idiots.

“I just grew up with a value system that prioritizes family and monogamy. I selfishly believe that if I don’t screw this up, I’ll be happier.”

In a separate interview, Minchin said it took him “fucking years” to heal.

“Because rich people can play sports,” he said. “It’s one of the privileges when everything goes well.”
