Former trauma specialist Dr Towler said he initially thought it was a Halloween joke when Maximen shone a torch through his mailbox. Bristol home in October 2019.

When he opened the front door, he was dragged out of the house and stabbed repeatedly.

During the attack, Maximen also shouted: “You killed the girl”, a phrase he never explained and made no sense to the victim nor to detectives.

After Maximen initially fled the scene, the doctor, 52, managed to crawl back inside and called police.

In the chilling 999 call recording, Maximen can be heard trying to turn around as he hurls himself into Dr. Towler’s front door.

Police were able to chase the teenager and arrest him at Clifton Down train station.

Maximen was jailed for life at Bristol Crown Court this week for assaulting a doctor and two others.

He also stabbed a man who came home from a night shift and attempted to break into a woman’s home.

Maximen denied plotting to kill Dr Towler, causing serious bodily harm with the intent of a night shift employee and two counts of possession of a knife but was convicted after a trial in December. last year.

He admitted a lesser charge of wounding.

Maximen was cleared of the aggravated burglary at the woman’s home, although Judge William Hart said he was “quite pleased” that he was the one who forced him into the act.

When he was sentenced, the judge told Maximen: “There is no reasonable explanation for any of your offenses other than that you are an extremely dangerous young man with a completely distorted vision. about life and
appropriate behaviour.

“It was not due to any recognized mental illness or diagnosed personality disorder.”

In a victim impact statement, Dr Towler – who is currently developing medical software – expressed his concern for the present and future 19-year-old, and the fact he will be in jail for too long.

He said: “To begin with, I want to say that I am not upset or angry with you.”

Describing a holiday he took after the attack, he said: “Amid all the wonderful experiences I’ve had with it, I never stop thinking about you.

“I don’t know why but sometimes I feel so bad that I have this great freedom but you don’t – I wonder if you just made a mistake, big mistake or bad luck lucky.

“When I compare my position to what I imagine to be yours, it seems unfair, even though I know it’s confusing.”

At the time, the judge said he was “envious” of the doctor’s “extraordinary forgiveness”.

And speaking to BBC Radio 4, the doctor described how he felt “connected” to his attacker.

He said: “I guess in a strange way I also felt a connection with him.

He and I are two individuals connected in this event. I was unable to talk to him. “
