‘I cried’: Postecoglou said he’d signed the star Tottenham ‘missed’

Gabby Agbonlahor believes Ange Postecoglou signed the player after Tottenham Hotspur ‘screamed’ with the transfer of James Maddison from Leicester City to Spurs.

Tottenham paid Leicester 40 million pounds wants to sign Maddison in June, with the England international also agreeing to sign a five-year deal. Spurs used the Foxes’ relegation from the Premier League to give Postecoglou an elite playmaker during his debut season in north London.

Maddison left King Power Stadium after scoring 43 goals and 34 assists in 163 top-flight games. He’s added two more assists to his tally this season. The 26-year-old scored twice on his debut for Tottenham against Brentford.

Maddison is already Tottenham’s head coach after his strong debut

Spurs began Postecoglou’s tenure with a 2-2 draw at Gtech Community Stadium after coming from a deficit. Cristian Romero gave Tottenham an early lead after converting Maddison’s free-kick. While Emerson Royal later equalized and gave Maddison a second assist.

Most of Tottenham’s promising attacks at Brentford came about through Maddison’s creativity. The three-caps maestro could have left west London with more assists if Mark Flekken Richarlison hadn’t blocked. He also led the north Londoners’ pressing against the Bees from the start.

Agbonlahor believes Maddison is Eriksen’s long-awaited replacement

Maddison will be hoping his two assists as Tottenham and Brentford took the lead lead to his first double-digit return to the top flight. The Coventry-born creator recorded his best season to date with nine 30-plus appearances during Leicester’s relegation. He also scored 10 goals for the second time.

Only in the 2021-22 season, when Maddison scored 12 goals in 35 games, did he hit the net more often. Postecoglou, who now has that attacking threat at his disposal, has convinced Agbonlahor that Tottenham have the player Spurs have been missing since Christian Eriksen’s departure.

“He’s the player Spurs were missing,” said Agbonlahor talkSPORT. “I’ve watched him for years [and] I saw him against Brentford – he just wants the ball.

“He’s addicted to the ball. That’s what Spurs need – a No10 who wants the ball all the time [and] want to make a difference. He’s got what it takes to be a set piece, he’s got what it takes to score [and] He has a great ability to turn and maneuver people in tight spaces.

“This is the player Spurs have been clamoring for since losing Eriksen.”

Inter Milan signed Eriksen from Tottenham in January 2020 17 million pounds as the Dane was out of contract this summer. He left north London after scoring 51 goals and 67 assists in 226 Premier League games. In his final season with Spurs, he recorded two goals and two assists.
