Hyper Light Breaker: Trailers, Gameplay Changes, Platforms and More

Heart Machine has announced Hyper Light Breaker, the long-awaited sequel to 2015’s critical favorite, Hyper Light Drifter. Here’s everything fans can expect from the sequel.
When Hyper Light Drifter released way back in 2016 after surpassing its original Kickstarter goal, gamers and critics alike were blown away by its gorgeous pixel art style and old-school action-RPG gameplay.
Six years later, the Heart Machine developers have announced a sequel called Hyper Light Breaker, this time published by Gearbox. What can fans expect from the highly anticipated sequel? We’ve broken it all down here.

Hyper Light Breaker trailer
Seemingly out of nowhere, Heart Machine and Gearbox released the Hyper Light Breaker trailer on March 31, 2022, giving fans of the original their first look at the new game. Check it out below:
Is there a Hyper Light Breaker release date?
Unfortunately, the first trailer didn’t give a specific release date, but it did confirm that players will eventually be able to get their hands on Hyper Light Breaker Spring 2023.
The sequel will initially be an Early Access title, but don’t be surprised if a full release follows later in the year.
Hyper Light Breaker Platforms
Hyper Light Breaker unleashes players in a new environment called The Overgrowth.
As it stands, due to its status as an Early Access game, Hyper Light Breaker is only confirmed to show up Steam. No details have yet been released as to if or when players on other platforms will be able to get their hands on it.
It’s not all doom and gloom, however. When Hyper Light Drifter was released, it initially only came for PC, but a few months later a console version was released.
We expect the sequel to follow suit, possibly when it leaves early access, so hopefully PlayStation and Xbox users won’t have to wait too long before trying it out for themselves.
Hyper Light Breaker gameplay details
The Drifter has a number of options to move around the map.
Although Hyper Light Breaker is a direct continuation of The Drifter’s story, it also marks a major departure from its predecessor. While the original placed players in a 2D sci-fi world, the new game features a 3D perspective more akin to Heart Machine’s last game – Solar Ash.
Traversing the larger areas of The Overgrowth is expedited by the hoverboard and glider available to players, allowing the Drifter to glide around the world with ease.
It also appears that Breaker will move the series away from its action-RPG roots in favor of more rouge-lite elements. But don’t worry, the flashy hack-and-slash combat is going nowhere.
With the next part, which was only added to the first game in a post-launch update, there will be more emphasis on co-op. This time, players can take on the challenge with friends from day one.
For more details, see the description on the Hyper Light Breaker official Steam page: “Play alone or with friends to explore vast biomes, defeat brutal monsters, create new builds, survive the mysterious crowns and the almighty King of the Abyss in this action rogue-lite adventure from the creators of Hyper Light Drifter.”
