Local councils have welfare support fund launched to help people pay for food, energy, and other necessities year-round.

Your local council may call it emergency assistance or providing benefits, but most set aside a lump sum of cash to provide to those in need.

For example, residents of Manchester receive Universal credit and benefit like job seeker benefits and possible retirement credits get between £30 and £60.

This is a cash grant, so you won’t have to pay it back, but you can only get it once every 12 months.

There are also some other requirements, for example you won’t get cash if you have any savings.

Whereas in Ealing, the council is give help for people who use General Credit and other benefits and are having a hard time getting them.

Again, there are other criteria you need to fill in to get help, and it can help save money on food, essential clothing, fuel, and travel costs.

Each council has different amounts of money to split, and the criteria for receiving it and cash is usually awarded on a case-by-case basis depending on each person’s needs.

The help available through the welfare assistance program is not exclusive to those people or General Credit.

As the help available varies, the eligibility criteria also change.

In the East Riding of Yorkshire, for example, you can apply if you can show that you cannot afford to live, cannot afford basic household items or has had a disruption in your regular income.

That amount is worth up to £1,000 and can help cover food, energy, bills and rent, although the exact amount will depend on your circumstances.

You can find out who your local council is by visiting gov.uk website and ask them what help is available in your area.

You will also need to apply through the board.

If you are not eligible for this specific help, other help may be available.

For example, there is also cash through Household Support Fund until the end of March.
