Parts of the UK can be facing temperatures as low as -12C tonight, and weather warnings are in place across the country.

According to research from Energy Helpline, leaving your radiator running all night will cost you an extra £10.80 a day.

Within a week that will cost you £75.60 and if you do it all month you could pay a whopping £335.

That’s for an average family home above energy price limit, is currently the cheapest available energy deal.

The calculations also assume that central heating was left on between 10pm and 7am, with an hour of heating costing up to £1.20.

But there are cheaper ways to stay warm at night when the weather is cold – we explain.

How can I stay warm at night without turning on central heating?

You’re better off turning on the heater for a few hours in the evening and then setting a timer so it comes on an hour before you’re supposed to wake up.

Another way to stay warm at night is to simply layer up and make sure you have a thick winter duvet.

If you are worried about getting cold at night, you can invest in an electric blanket.

Turning it on about half an hour before you sleep will warm up your bed and it’s also much cheaper to run.

According to research from Uswitch, they use 100 watts of power for a double bed – a total of 0.8p to run for 30 minutes.

That means if you use it seven days a week during this period, it will only cost you 5.6p.

Also, if you want to turn on central heating in your bedroom, make sure you turn off radiators in rooms you don’t use to cut costs.

Finally, some households qualify for a heating deduction when the temperature drops below zero.
