How many people play Overwatch? Player Counter (2022)

A general feeling among Overwatch players is that the game is dying and they hold onto hope that its sequel, Overwatch 2, will revive it. Despite the harsh community feedback, people are still enjoying playing Overwatch ovr six years after its release, according to the latest Player Count tracker.
Overwatch, Blizzard’s first-person hero shooter, first debuted in 2016 to much hype and excitement around both the game himself and his esports company, the Overwatch League (OWL).
Since then, the game has spawned some amazing moments in the FPS world, including several big, personal events for the OWL with packed stadiums and exciting matches. But half a decade after its release, the title has also suffered some less-than-stellar moments, including a litany of delays for Overwatch 2. It’s been a roller-coaster ride for fans of the franchise, to say the least.
But how many people are still signing up to play Overwatch?
It’s more than you might think.

Overwatch monthly active players
Accordingly active player, Overwatch has gained at least 5 million average players every month in 2021, peaking at 7.3 million. There was a peak of around 500,000 to 600,000 daily players.
Also, towards the end of 2021-2022, the average monthly player count for Overwatch has increased to nearly 7 million.
That data is an estimate, the site claims, but is still a staggering amount for a game that’s now over five years old.

Overwatch averaged 6.9 million active players as of January 2022.
For context, here are some other notable game numbers for active players in January 2022. Overwatch peaked this month estimated 6.9 million active playersall according to Active Player.

Overwatch hasn’t received any notable new content since then April 2020, when the hero Echo was released. Only skins and maps have been added since then. Not only that, but games like Apex Legends, Fortnite, Valorant, and League of Legends continue to innovate their esports and have a constant cycle of new characters and in-game content for players to enjoy.
But all hope is not lost for Overwatch.
The future of Overwatch

Overwatch 2 is on the horizon.
Both the game and the Overwatch League have had their fair share of troubles over the past two years. However, everyone has an exciting opportunity to grow and move forward. That hope is manifested in the form of Overwatch 2, the long-awaited sequel to the game announced at Blizzcon in 2019.
If Overwatch 2 can be to Destiny what Destiny 2 was, and the OWL can succeed in their homestead/travel model envisioned in 2018, each of them may be in for a renaissance of their own in the years to come. While there are still many hurdles to overcome before then, there is room for optimism for fans of the franchise.
