Eternal, undying, soul-wrenching shame on you, Facebook and Twitter and Politico and all the others who have covered up, denied and suppressed this newspaper true and accurate reporting about Hunter Biden’s laptop in 2020. You should throw yourself at the feet of the American people and ask for forgiveness. They should rent posters that say “WE LIED”.
But most importantly, you should be dragged before Congress to answer humiliating questions.
These and other information providers owe us – not just this newspaper, but this country – reparations for what now looks like the most egregious and deliberate fake news scam of our time. This newspaper’s scoops on Hunter Biden’s laptop in 2020 were labeled “Russian misinformation” (Politico), a “hoax” (Steven Brill of “fact-check” site NewsGuard), discredited by “many, many red flags” (NPR) and a “hack and leak” operation that had to be throttled (Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg).
It became notorious on Twitter, as did The Post’s Twitter account, for having a hacked material policy that seemed to apply only to this one case.
Twitter hasn’t blocked the New York Times stories about Donald Trump’s tax returns, which for all we know could have come from hacked materials and were almost certainly the result of a criminal act (leaking tax returns is against the law) , but the Times didn’t even tell us how the returns came about, so we don’t know.
The Post traded transparency by explaining to readers how they got the laptop from hell. Additionally, no one on Team Biden disputed the Post’s report because they knew or suspected it was true. Every news outlet in the country should have been leading the story at this point: “The Biden team refuses to deny Hunter Biden’s laptop story.” A few months later, Hunter himself said that the laptop “certainly” could be , and the media shrugged rather than apologize.
Even in the presidential debate where the matter was raised, Joe Biden’s remarks were not a denial, just a distraction, and anyone who reported denying the laptop story was once again guilty of spreading fake news. What he actually said was, “There are 50 former National Intelligence officials who said what he’s accusing me of is a Russian factory. Five former CIA chiefs, both parties, say what he says is a pile of rubbish. Nobody believes it except his good friend Rudy Giuliani.”
Joe (who later said “Yes, yes, yes” when a reporter asked him if he “believed” the laptop was Russian disinformation – the question gave him all the latitude in the world) specifically did not deny that the laptop belonged to Hunter , and did not deny that the material on it was genuine. He was simply referring to Politico’s now infamous Oct. 19, 2020 whitewash, which was fake news upon fake news: the headline, “Hunter Biden Story Is Russian Disinfo, Dozens of Former Intelligence Officials Say” wasn’t even accurate again what was in the story. These officials simply said they were “suspicious” about Russian involvement, admitted they had no evidence of this, and pointed out (this was buried in the 10th paragraph of Politico’s story): “We would like to emphasize that we don’t know if the emails are… genuine or not.”
In other words, the notorious liar James Clapper et al. (as far as I can tell, every signer who voiced their opinion on the election was a Biden supporter) just pee in the dark. Their wild speculations weren’t worth publishing.
But Politico’s fake headline on this piece of partisan fan fiction gave the media and its Democratic Party enforcers all the cover they needed to treat the whole story as if it were a ploy planted by Vladimir Putin.
Say geniuses, if Putin had just made the whole thing up, don’t you think Hunter Biden would have said, “That’s not my stuff”? And wouldn’t Putin have planted material that would have scuppered Joe Biden’s presidential ambitions instead of just asking questions about his son’s business dealings?
All Jen Psaki had to do was retweet Politico’s bullspit headline. Who reads beyond the headlines?
The Times and other major newspapers simply ignored the content of The Post’s story, and now their readers know, or rather have just been reminded, that they are Democratic Party cheerleaders who allow even presidential candidates to dictate details of how they do it be covered.
Next time they “fact check,” next time they scream wolf, who’s gonna believe them?
