How 5G service could affect your flight to and from Denver

DENVER (KDVR) – Fast and powerful, but rollout of 5G wireless service impacted some flights to and from the US

Airlines are working with wireless carriers to ensure a smooth rollout. The worry is that 5G services could interfere with the in-flight altimeter technology.

Not all aircraft are likely to be affected. The FAA has announced it will allow 78% of US aircraft to land in low visibility conditions at airports near 5G service.

Airlines cancel only about 2% of flights in the US, according to Flight knowledge.

Winter storms, pandemics and holiday travel cause higher numbers of flight delays and cancellations.

Travel experts say trip insurance is a good idea.

“If your flight is delayed [and] you can’t make it work any longer, the airline owes you anything under federal law [with] voucher or hotel stay. Travel insurance will step in and close that gap,” Skyler McKinley said of Colorado’s AAA.

McKinley adds that the rule of thumb is to insure any trip that costs more than $1,000.

The FAA announced it will release a list of planes that will not be able to land near 5G towers.

Airline customers should check the status of their flight before arriving at the airport.
