Alaska State Troopers identify the woman as 40-year-old Selena Pau Pres.
“The Alaska State Troopers’ Alaska Bureau of Investigation is conducting a death investigation into this incident, which is standard law enforcement practice for the majority of Alaskan deaths,” said Austin McDaniel, Alaska State Troopers director of communications.
The 40-year-old was on board the Solstice cruise ship, operated by Celebrity Cruises, which was cruising the Alaskan coast.
The ship was in the upper Lynn Channel on Tuesday when investigators said it went overboard around 3am
The US Coast Guard spent more than nine hours searching for her by air and sea but halted the search after finding no sign of her.
“Despite our best efforts to locate the individual, it is with a heavy heart that we make the decision to suspend the search,” said Lt. Coast Guard Trevor Layman, a duty officer at the Sector Juneau Command Center. “The decision to suspend active search is based on a number of factors, including weather, sea conditions, water temperature and other variables.”
The Coast Guard says the estimated survival time in 41-degree water is just over six hours.
A report from KIRO TV In the state of Seattle, the ship’s surveillance cameras captured the moment she fell into the water.
Passengers on board report that the ship stalled shortly after going overboard.
The ship resumed its cruise after the Coast Guard called off the search.
