Houston Texans defensive back Justin Reid talks Man of the Year nomination and firing head coach David Culley

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – During a visit to ABC13 Friday, Texas celebrity Justin Reid appreciated his former head coach, current award nominations, and his future freelance agency. .

“It’s just the business side of the NFL,” Reid said of David Culley being fired from Texas after a year on the job. “The NFL isn’t always fair.”

On Friday, Texans general manager Nick Caserio said the brand is in a better position than it was when the team signed a five-year contract with Culley in early 2021.

“I think there’s a lot of truth and value to it,” Reid said when asked about Caserio’s assertion. “When Nick and Coach Culley first arrived here, it was the most chaotic franchise in the NFL. A lot of credit goes to Coach Culley. He came in and tackled a lot, and was very enthusiastic. But obviously, we still have some work to do.”

Reid stopped by the station ahead of Saturday’s tweet and hello event held at the Wakefield CrowBar from 1pm to 5pm. The tweet and greeting were part of Reid’s Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year nomination. The Man of the Year award is considered the league’s highest honor, as it recognizes an NFL player for outstanding community service off the field, as well as excellence on the field. Reid is Texas’ nominee in 2021.

“Know all that encapsulates and represents – it means a lot,” Reid said of the nomination. “Walter Payton himself was a fantastic player on the pitch, but he also impacted everyone he met. He touched their lives in a positive way. really enjoyed doing, and I do. admire him in that respect.”

When Hurricane Ida made landfall in his home state of Louisiana earlier this year, Reid did not hesitate to lead the responsibility to contribute to the community that has shaped him into the person he is today. He quickly organized a driver relief event at NRG Stadium. The Houstonians and Reid’s teammates helped him raise more than $10,000 and filled two 18-wheelers with donated items like unperishable food, bottled water, toiletries and dog food for the devastated community.

“It all started in my childhood,” Reid says of his dedicated passion. “My parents instilled in me from the very beginning that we are lucky. So if we have a chance to pass the blessing on to anyone else – we should do it. I’m lucky because I am. there are always good role models around me as a parent and as my coach. I want to pass that mentoring on to the next generation.”

Reid has impacted the lives of countless children who need him most across Houston. Three local organizations have been the biggest beneficiaries of Reid’s generosity: Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Families Coalition, Greater Houston Boys & Girls Club, and Children’s Meals .
