Houston mugging caught on camera: HPD arrests Joshua DeLoach on charges of robbery and kidnapping of roommate

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A man accused of robbing and kidnapping his roommate has been arrested, according to Houston police.

Joshua DeLoach, 29, is scheduled to appear in court Friday.

He is accused of pointing a gun at his roommate on May 8 when he was asked to pay his rent.

His roommate said he asked the suspect to move out after missing two months of rent. From there things escalated.

Security camera footage from the victim’s home on Block 300 of Eado Park Circle shows the incident.

DeLoach can be seen on surveillance video pulling out a gun and threatening his roommate Justin Iwuji, telling him to get on his knees.

Off-frame, Iwujii can be heard begging the suspect.

“Bro… what’s up?” asks Iwuji.

The victim said DeLoach held him at gunpoint, demanded that he transfer $6,000 to his bank account, and then forced him to open a safe containing jewelry and take some items.

Iwuji then said he was forced into a shower, where the gunman allegedly pretended to shoot him. Instead, he reportedly tied up Iwuji, blindfolded him, put him in the trunk of his own car, and drove away.

ABC13 spoke to the roommate about his escape earlier this week.

“I then push myself out of the car with my feet. I fall to the ground I manage to pry myself up with the car’s tire. I somehow manage to get the tape off my ankles. Then I just stand up and I lose weight—arms, wrists, hands are still tied together,” Iwuji recalled. “I run across some main streets, across a shopping area, across the street. There’s another lady in her vehicle. She starts driving. I wave to her. She is slowing down but she looks very scared and confused. Honestly, I don’t blame her for not stopping.”

Iwuji said he ran to a nearby road and stopped a truck, whose driver took him to meet the police.

“He stopped and I said, ‘Hey, I don’t have to get in your car. I get in the back of your truck. “So he said, ‘OK, get in the back of the truck.’ “So I got in the back of his truck. I lay flat and he drove several miles and stopped and the police were able to meet us.”

The suspect drove approximately 25 miles from Houston’s East End to FM-1960 before Iwuji was able to escape.
