Houston Methodist Announces New $1.4 Billion Centennial Hospital Tower To Open In 2027

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — The Texas Medical Center skyline is about to change, although it’s still a little way off.

Houston Methodist is building a $1.4 billion Centennial Tower, scheduled to open in 2027.

The 26-story building will house a new and larger emergency room and nearly 400 patient beds. The tower will also replace the existing room for transplant medicine, intermediate care and surgical critical care, the hospital said.

The new emergency area will have a larger entrance at John Freeman Boulevard and Bertner Avenue, which will also include pedestrian and ambulance stops.

In addition, the tower will replace seven operating rooms and add two operating rooms and expanded radiology services.

It’s a medical building, but there’s also a feature that makes it even less clinical.

The tower’s 14th floor will feature a roof garden with trees and landscaping to allow patients, visitors and staff to find some tranquility, Methodist says.

Once complete, the tower will connect to the Paula and Joseph C. “Rusty” Walter III Tower, which opened in 2018 and houses the DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center and the Houston Methodist Neurological Institute.

The project means that Houston Methodist’s main building, which currently houses patient beds, will be demolished along with the West Pavilion.
