Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said Friday afternoon that he has tested positive for COVID-19.
In a statement, Turner said he felt sick overnight but thought allergies or a sinus infection were to blame. As a precaution, however, he checked himself in on Friday morning before starting his daily schedule, then canceled his schedule for the day and into the weekend. He said his positive test result came back on Friday afternoon.
Turner said he is experiencing mild symptoms and will spend the next few days in isolation and rest.
Turner has been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and received a booster shot, according to his spokesman.
City employees who regularly communicate with the mayor, such as his security details, executive office staff and several others, are checked in with Turner every two weeks, the Houston Chronicle reported.
On Friday, Turner toured contaminated neighborhoods with EPA Administrator Michael Regan.
