“It’s difficult at the moment, but it’s getting better for us. It gets better because we have a praying family. We believe in God,” said Kathy Davis, Nikki’s grandmother.
Houston police say Nikki’s boyfriend was driving and her family say their 12-year-old and 1-year-old daughters were in the car with them when someone in a dark-colored SUV pulled up next to them and started shooting. You don’t know why.
“We never thought this would happen to us. We see it on the news all the time, but we’re like, ‘No, not our family.’ We’re not out there on these streets. We don’t do anything bad. But look what happened to my daughter, my granddaughter,” Kathy said.
Nikki’s family say she was a positive person and a loving mother.
“You will recognize Nikki when you walk into a room with Nikki. You’ll know who Nikki was when you left,” said Shanita Vital-Davis, Nikki’s aunt.
“She had a smile on her face the whole time,” Shanita added.
The shooting took place in a neighborhood where the ABC13 data team found homicides increased 13% over the past 12 months compared to the three-year average.
This incident also contributes to the rise in street homicides across Houston, which have doubled from 2019 to 2021.

“These young people are wild. They’re trying to take it back to the wild, wild west. This isn’t the wild, wild west. Stop grabbing guns,” Kathy said.
Nikki’s family is now another call for an end to this violence and for answers.
“If someone has a heart and knows something, they will say it. I’m waiting for that,” Kathy said.
HPD is still investigating. You have a vague suspect description. As of now, police believe the suspect or suspects may have been driving a dark-colored Nissan Rogue during the shooting.
If you know anything about what happened, you are asked to call the HPD Homicide Division or Crime Stoppers.
