Honored: Dua Lipa celebrates being granted Albanian citizenship by the country’s president

Dua Lipa was granted Albanian citizenship by the country’s President.

The ‘Don’t Start Now’ singer was born in London to Kosovar Albanian parents and has often taken to social media to pay tribute to her family’s legacy.

Ahead of the 110th anniversary of Albania’s declaration of independence from the Ottoman Empire, the 27-year-old was granted citizenship of the country by President Bajram Begaj.

Lipa has been praised for promoting Albania around the world and upon receiving citizenship he said: “I will also be an Albanian with papers”, adding: “It is an indescribable great joy with such acceptance, love and everything.”

On Sunday (November 27), Lipa shared a series of photos and videos from the ceremony on Instagram.

“Thank you President Bajram Begaj and Mayor @erionveliaj for this honor ~ got my Albanian citizenship!!” she wrote.

She then posted a photo posing with the Albanian flag ahead of the final show of her Future Nostalgia tour on Monday (November 28).

“110 YEARS OF INDEPENDENCE,” Lipa commented. “So happy to be in Tirana, Albania ~ as the newest citizen performing for you all tonight ~ THE FINAL FUTURE NOSTALGIA SHOW.”

Although she spent her younger years in the UK, Lipa lived with her family in Kosovo from the ages of 11 to 15 shortly after the country declared independence.

In August, Lipa was named Honorary Ambassador of Kosovo by the President of the Republic of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani-Sadriu, after organizing the Sunny Hill music festival in the country together with her father.

Lipa shared pictures from the event on Instagram and wrote: “It is an honor and a privilege to be able to represent my country around the world and to continue my work and efforts worldwide to see that we are making our mark and making a difference.

“The youth of Kosovo deserve the right to visa liberalization, freedom to travel and dream big. Many Thanks.”
