Hit-and-run driver crashes into mom and 4 young children on NYC street

Four young children and a mother were hit by a driver who reportedly smashed through school bus signs in Brooklyn on Wednesday night, police and witnesses said.
The 41-year-old mother, who was traveling with a baby in a stroller, was picking up two of her children from the school bus at the corner of Avenue J and New York Avenue in Midwood when a driver crashed into the group of five before 5 p.m., police said With.
“It was just awful… the stroller was actually on the ground,” witness Joanne Johnson told The Post.
All five victims, including the mother’s 8- and 5-year-old children, were taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition. The other two injured children were 1 and 3 years old.
According to police and a witness, some of the children got off the bus when they were hit.

The woman was trapped under the bus and screamed for help, according to Johnson.
“[The mother] cried, probably thinking she was going to die, of course thinking about her children. So it was very dramatic,” she added.
The driver fled the scene, but the car was recovered unoccupied by police shortly after the accident. Witnesses told police a woman fled the vehicle.
No arrests were made.

Johnson, who lives on the corner, said she heard the car, a white Mercedes, before it even hit the children and the mother.
“The white car just drove past the stop signs,” she said. “Unfortunately the [car] I didn’t stop, of course, and just kept driving.”
She said she heard the mother scream, “Help me and my children, my children.”

“Oh Jesus, you know, right now you just have to pray because it’s scary,” Johnson said.
“It was so loud and tense,” added the terrified neighbor.
