Paul Merson says Brennan Johnson’s move to Tottenham Hotspur will ‘suit’ Ange Postecoglou’s player and side.
Daniel Levy is always happy about a deadline day transfer, well it looks like Tottenham will at least get one today as Brennan Johnson joins Hotspur Way from Nottingham Forest.
The 22-year-old has made great strides in recent seasons. Merson explained that this is a “good signing” for Tottenham and that he is someone who “will only get better”, as he said on Deadline Day Sky Sports (09/01/23 at 14:30).
After the loss of star player Harry Kane, Spurs have had to strengthen their attacking line to make up for the large number of goals they lose at the hands of the England captain.
And while Johnson isn’t a direct replacement for Bayern’s now-star, he’s someone who will only enrich a line of forwards trying to move beyond the Kane era.
When he found out about the Johnson news, he was supported by Merson, who likes the deal and fits all parties.
“It’s definitely a good move for the player,” Merson said. “It’s a top club, Tottenham. A great stadium. It’s a big playing field. It will suit his ability and it will suit Tottenham.
“Tottenham want to spread the game. I don’t see too many at Tottenham willing to run without the ball. He does, and he will spread the game and allow others to get the ball in midfield.
“I think it’s a good signing for Tottenham, that’s really true. He has a lot of pace and is only getting better, the boy.”
Competition for Richarlison
The Brazilian star has struggled during his time at the club following his record-breaking transfer last summer.
While Richarlison scored in Spurs’ EFL Cup defeat by Fulham on Tuesday, he has just one goal to his credit in the Premier League.
Well, with the arrival of Johnson, he will add some competition and allow Ange Postecoglou to play the versatile striker in the middle.
